How can virtual identity be trusted when anybody can create, manipulate, and modify them?Since, on the web, people do not interact with actual people, sure that one person can have multiple identities. The article on NPR, "Startups Help Clean Up Online Reputations" introduces the company which does it for you.
My answer is probably you are identified by the reputation which build by others. When I go to eBay or Amazon, I always look at the rating of users.
Fair enough, that the company can manipulate their rating as well. However, I think what makes website, web identity credible is the consistency of the reputation. If you see 50 super good ratings and 50 super bad ratings, then you would wonder the quality of the reputation system and also the company. I think company should and would maintain their reputation system honest and credible in order to earn trust from the customers.

what do you think about the sellers that do not really have an excellent rating, because every time i go on the web to buy something i always look at the rating and i immediately eliminate the ones without excellent scores, for me and for most of the people is basically good or bad and there is nothing in the middle, do you think that building up a reputation is basically just identifying yourself as a good or bad seller, people would not want to buy from an "ok" seller, and i fell that the reputation system does not really provide the entire picture, could you comment on that a little bit..
I think rating system is the way simpler measure to evaluate something without providing any details. However, I rather regard web-based reputation system as warning system to the customers. When I bought bed on amazon.com, by reading warning comments and seeing extremely bad ratings, I think I avoided uncertain risk that I otherwise had to take to purchase the item!
